About the CommunityJuan Bosch is the poorest in the region of La Vega, Dominican Republic, where we serve. There are approximately 115 houses where around 450 people live. The community has no running water or electricity. The houses have mostly dirt floors, no bathrooms, and are made out of whatever materials may be available. The houses are one or two rooms where multiple family members of different ages live in substandard conditions.
Most people in this community are squatters and have no legal documentation in the country. Children are unable to attend school without documentation and parents cannot afford the required uniforms and shoes. Most heads of household either don't work or are day laborers. It's not uncommon to see children running around naked and barefooted, plagued by lice and other diseases. The extreme poverty gives way to other social ailments like prostitution and drug trafficking. Transportation is limited by only one dirt road in and out of the community in very tough condition. |
